My family and I are quite close to a Swami (a Hindu Teacher of spiritual works) who lives in Mumbai. He has an Ashram in Uttarkashi, a small town in the foothills of the Himalayas.
Due to intense amounts of rain in the foothills, Uttarkashi, which is located around a tributary of the Ganges known as the Asi-Ganga has been hit by major floods and landslides. Because of this, the majority of the town, including the temple, many houses, hotels and the only bridge connecting the town to the major highway have been washed away or buried. Amongst the devastation, Swamiji’s Ashram (Hermitage) and the School that he spent years building for all the children to attain at least basic education (both boys and girls until the age of 16 are taught there) have been completely destroyed, meaning that there is no place for the children to study or be taught the essentials that they require to be able to exceed their means later on in life.
Last summer, I went to teach at the ashram, and I can honestly say that it was one of the most fulfilling experiences that I have had, and I have traveled to many countries to teach in the past. I’ve never met such a focused group of students, students who wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to learn more, to dream of better things for themselves and their families because such things would be outside the realm of possibility.
I don’t mean to ask anything of you lot, but if you know anyone who would be willing to help out in any way (well, it’s mainly donations at this point in time) it would be so incredibly wonderful. Of course, the majority of the donations are being collected by a family friend of mine in Hong Kong, and not by me, but if you think you’d be interested, please feel free to send me a message and I’m sure we could work something out.
I know there are a lot of people on the internet who claim to want to collect funds and then use the money for themselves, but I can PROMISE you, guarantee you, that this is for an honest, legitimate cause that’s incredibly, incredibly important to me.
I’m going to be making similar posts on facebook, both for my friends at school and for people at university. I really hope we’ll be able to get together and make something happen.
Sorry for the incredibly long post….
it was important.
^ Images of the school and the area around it. Two of the main buildings have been completely destroyed and parts of the school have caved in. Houses, roads and forests around the area are practically gone.
