- The murder of Balbir Singh Sodhi, a gas station owner in Arizona who was killed four days after 9/11, was blamed on a person who “mistook” him for a Muslim. Many hate crimes towards Sikhs, in fact, have been blamed on people who “mistake” them for Muslims— the beards, turbans, brown skin. Though, an attack on any Muslim American would not be and could not be justified, either. Actions as such are willful, hateful and blinding. Urgent agenda: discuss hate towards Sikhs and Muslims in America. Also, guns. Or are we supposed to be quiet until the next shooting?
- Mental instability is not, and cannot be a valid defense. If perpetrators of such violence can chart out variables and abstract possibilities of their actions, there exists both intent, and motive. Not ruling out the possibility entirely, such people should be provided mental health facilities, while being detained, to prevent further damage to society.
